Biography

(Karl) Hjalmar Strååt (b. Norrköping, Sweden 1885 – d. Stockholm, Sweden 1971), initially a furniture designer in Åtvidaberg for four years, studied at the school of Nicky Sahlström (1854-1932) in Norrköping, at the school of Carl Athlin (1866-1919) in Stockholm (1908-09) and at the Academy of Arts, Stockholm (1910-13) under Emerik Stenberg (1873- 1927). As a printmaker and painter, he had exhibitions at Galleri Gummerson and Galleri Brinken in Stockholm as well as in Norrköping, Västerås, Örebro, Karlstad and Borås. He participated in the autumn salons of the Sveriges Allmänna Konstförening (SAK) and group exhibitions at the Graphic Society, the Swedish Artists’ Association, the Academy of Arts in Stockholm and the Baltic Art Exhibition (1914) in Malmö, amongst others. Internationally, he participated in a graphics exhibition in Leipzig where he was awarded a medal in 1914, the Swedish art exhibitions in Copenhagen and Vienna as well as graphics exhibitions in Brussels, Helsinki and New York. Strååt was chairman of the The Graphic Society (1921–1944). As a member of the Original Woodcut Association he contributed woodcuts to the association's Wis-Bok and illustrated and wrote for numerous Swedish publications.
