Copyright Policy

The Contemporary Art Society is committed to carrying out due diligence in tracing relevant rights holders in order to obtain permission to reproduce works on our website. In some instances, despite our best efforts, the identity of a rights holder remains unknown, resulting in so-called ‘orphan works’. We assess each ‘orphan’ on a case by case basis, and if we have a suitable image to share, these works are reproduced on the website with the copyright credit “copyright holder”. We believe that illustrating such works online is one of the best ways to discover copyright holders. If you have contact details of any copyright holders please do write to us on: rights@contemporaryartsociety.org 

In some instances we have unfortunately not been able to source an adequate image of an artwork, or copyright permission has not been granted to share the image. These instances will be indicated by a placeholder instead of the artwork image. If you are a collection or a rightsholder that might be able to help supply missing images, please do contact us on: rights@contemporaryartsociety.org

If you hold rights in an image on our website and do not agree with its reproduction, you can request the image's removal by writing to rights@contemporaryartsociety.org providing the following information:

• Your name, email address and phone number
• The exact URL where the image was found
• A statement that you are the copyright holder or are authorised to act on behalf of the rights holder (You may be asked to provide proof of this ownership)
• We will review your request and endeavour to respond to your message within seven working days. Once a takedown request has been approved the image will be removed within a further two working days. The Contemporary Art Society is a small organisation with a charitable mission so we thank you for your patience during this time.
