This dramatic charcoal drawing depicts a view of the Picos de Europa mountains in Asturias in northern Spain, where David Bomberg, together with his future wife Lilian Holt, his eleven year old step-daughter Dinora and his baby daughter Diana, travelled to in July 1935. They stayed in a farmhouse around the tiny settlement of Linares for about four months, just before the Spanish Civil War broke out. It was exhibited in Bomberg: An Exhibition of Major Painting and Drawings, Fischer Fine Art, London (1988), a year after it was gifted by Mrs Dinora Davies-Rees (1924-2009) and her daughter, Mrs Juliet Lamont.
