This bronze bust sitter is Mrs Kathleen Garman, Lady Epstein (1901-1979) who was Jacob Epstein's secretary and model, whom he married in 1955 as his second wife. It is the first of seven sculpted portraits of her which was begun the day after the artist met Kathleen in August 1921. More casts of this work are in the Rutherston Collection, Manchester Art Gallery; New Art Gallery Walsall; and another in a private collection in the USA.
