Harald Krohg Stabell (1874 - 1963)

Biography

Harald Krohg Stabell (b. Strinda, Norway – d. Trondheim, Norway 1963) trained as an architect at Trondheim’s Technical Institute in 1897 although he had already exhibited paintings. Between 1897 and 1901 he stayed in London attending several art schools whilst working in an architectural office. He exhibited watercolours at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.He was influenced by Japanese art, Norman and Celtic ornamentation as well as the Art Nouveau style and artists such as James McNeill Whistler, Arthur Melville, Gaston la Tauch and Frank Brangwyn. Stabell moved back to Trondheim in 1910, having assisted in the rebuilding of Ålesund after the town fire of 1904, and taught at the newly-established Norwegian Technical University (NTH) where he was Professor until 1945. He revisited England and travelled throughout France and Spain between 1919-24. He is represented in museums in Stockholm, Madrid, New York and London.
