Biography
Rotherham Heritage Services’ collection has been acquired since the opening of Clifton Park Museum in 1893. From 1908, local benefactor Edward Nightingale donated 81 oil and water colour paintings, "to form the nucleus of a really good and instructive series of art productions, which a town of such importance as Rotherham should possess".
The Museum has continued to collect work, much of which has a local significance. Clifton Park Museum was originally the home of the Walker family and the collection includes works of and by family members including a number by Dame Ethel Walker. Paintings in the collection include 'Ann Verelst' (c.1771) by George Romney; a pair by John Singleton Copley after David Morier: 'George II' and 'Frederick, Prince Of Wales', both c.1800; 'The Adoration of the Shepherds’ by the circle of Scarsellino; 'Diana, Returning from the Chase' by William Etty; 'Landscape Study' by Henry Herbert La Thangue; 'Thomas Newbould' by David Jagger (complemented by sculptures by his brother Charles Sargeant Jagger), and the William Cowen painting 'View of Rotherham'.
