Westwood is the name of the farm in north Yorkshire where William Tillyer lived and worked. He and his wife moved there in 1987 and within two years aspects of the landscape seeped into his work. There are 18 works in the Westwood series. In Three Vertical Landscapes (1989) the artist is using a broom-head to deposit an arc or a comma of paint, clear in its lateral edges, broken where it starts or finishes. Their colour identifies them: sky, light, plants, earth, corn. Eric Cass (1922-2018) originally saw the triptych at the Bernard Jacobson Gallery in London in 1989 but was not able to purchase it until his study at his home, Bleep at Virginia Water in Surrey which he shared with his wife, Erica, was completed in 1990.
