Amy Jayne Hughes (1985)

Biography

Amy Jayne Hughes (b. Dewsbury, Yorkshire, UK) studied at Dewsbury and Batley School of Art (2003-04); 3D Design (Ceramics) at Loughborough University School of Art & Design (2004-07) and did a postgraduate degree in Ceramics and Glass at the School of Material at the Royal College of Art, London (2008-10). Hughes was a founding member of the East London multi-disciplinary art and design studio, Manifold and held a residency at Konstfack School, Stockholm, Sweden (2011) as well as being the V&A Ceramics & Industry Artist in Residence in collaboration with 1882Ltd (2015). Hughes won the inaugural Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize (2015) and was been nominated for the Perrier-Jouet Arts Salon Prize (2016). She has participated in COLLECT - International Art Fair for Modern Craft and Design, Saatchi Gallery with Vessel Gallery (2017, 2019 & 2021) and shown at Cynthia Corbett Gallery, at the Victoria & Albert Museum as part of London Design Festival, whilst also presenting her first solo show at Croome Court (National Trust), funded by Arts Council England.

Most recently Hughes was selected as one of 5 commissioned artists to work on the Leach 100 with The Leach Pottery, St Ives, Cornwall, UK part of centenary celebrations looking at the past, the present and the future of studio pottery. In 2015 she was selected as one of eleven artists for AWARD as part of the British Ceramics Biennia ‘presenting new works exemplifying the energy and vitality of the best of British contemporary ceramics practice.’ Hughes was chosen to take part in the first ‘Future Heritage’ showcase at Decorex 2014 and was a finalist for the Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize in the same year.  In 2021 she participated in For the Love of the Master: 25 artists fascinated by Piranesi – a group exhibition celebrating the legacy of this versatile Roman artist in the 21st century. This homage to Piranesi was held in Dublin Castle & the Casino at Marino, Dublin, Ireland. She is internationally represented by the Cynthia Corbett Gallery, London and was recently shortlisted for the Brookfield Properties Craft Award 2023. More recent group exhibitions have includes Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, Miami (2024); Cynthia Corbett Gallery, Summer Exhibition, London; British Art Fair, Saatchi Gallery, London; Collect Art Fair, London and Art Miami (all 2023).
