Professor Brian Falconbridge PPRBS (1950)

Biography

Brian Falconbridge PPRBS (b. Fakenham, Norfolk, UK 1950) studied at Canterbury College of Art 1968-69, at Goldsmiths' College, London (1970-73) and the Slade School of Fine Art, (1973-75). He was President of the Royal Society of Sculptors (2004-09) whose work includes sculptures in bronze and wood, often constructivist in form. His influences include European metaphysical still-life painting, 17th-century Spanish painting, East-Asian thought, visual and literary culture, especially those of Japanese haiku and classical Chinese poetry. He taught with Michael Kenny RA and with Reg Butler at the Slade before becoming a full-time academic at Goldsmiths’ including as Head of Visual Arts (1997-2003). He subsequently became Dean of The Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Media & Design at London Metropolitan University before retiring from the position in 2011 to resume full-time studio practice.
