Biography
Charles Kvapil b. Antwerp, Belgium 1884 - d. Paris, France 1957) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He was known largely as a figure painter, particularly for his depictions of nudes and bathers which were influenced by Courbet and later, Paul Cézanne. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, Paris in 1920. He is represented in many public and private collections including the Modern Art Museum in Paris, Le Havre, Rouen, Saint Etienne, Amsterdam, and Tunis. Dr Harold Paine Widdup (1899-1962) bequeathed a Seated Nude (1927) to the Contemporary Art Society who donated it to The Wilson, Cheltenham in 1968.
