Biography
James Joshua Guthrie (b. Glasgow, Scotland, UK 1874 - d. 1952) worked in the family metal business and studied part-time at Heatherley’s School of Fine art and at the British Museum. In 1895 founded The Elf magazine and four years later the Pear Tree Press (1899). He published his own books, being responsible for all the processes. His own graphic work is sometimes experimental, often intense in feeling. He exhibited at the Baillie Gallery, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and at the Barcelona International Exhibition, winning a gold medal. His books include An Album of Drawings and The Proportional System of Typographical Composition. Lived at Flansham, Sussex. He was the father of the artist Robin Guthrie.
