Biography
Jeff Lowe (b. Lancaster, UK 1952) studied at Leicester College of Art (1970-71) and at Saint Martin's School of Art (1971-75) and was taught by many of the prominent sculptors of this time including William Tucker, Philip King and Anthony Caro. He held his first solo show whilst still a student at the Leicester Galleries (1974) and has continued exhibiting at galleries such asa sereos Nicola Jacobs Gallery, London (from 1981); Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, Australia (1987); MAAK Gallery, London (1994); Galerias Municipais De Arte, Trem Gallery, Faro, Portugal (2001); Robert Steele Gallery, New York, USA (2003, 2005, 2007 & 2008); Ashby Space, London (2014 & 2015) and Pangolin, London (2016 & 2020) and Echoes, AKA Fine Art, Cambridge (2023).
He represented Britain at the Paris Biennale and has participated in many group exhibitions in London and throughout the UK, Portugal and Holland as well as in the USA and Australia, amongst others. He was awarded the Sainsbury Award (1975); GLAA Award (1976) and the Pollock-Krasner Award, New York (1993). Lowe was an artist in residence at Prahran College, Melbourne, Australia (1978) and Mermer Stone Quarry, Yugoslavia (1977). He lived in London and Portugal from the 1970’s but moved to The Limeworks, Faversham, Kent in 2017 when he started with curvilinear sheets of aluminium, which incorporated openings, overlapping layers, and dramatic use of colour. He has taught at Reading University; Canterbury College of Art, London and the advanced course at Central Saint Martins.
