John Scott Dugger (b. Bellflower, Los Angeles, California, USA 1948 - d. USA, 2023) studied at University of Chicago School of Arts Institute and the Gilmore Institute of Fine Arts in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1967 he went to London where he became a member of the avant-garde group Exploding Galaxy. Since 1974 Dugger has made banner art of varying scales, for the theatre and political gatherings, gyms and other places of recreation and, more recently, commercial and industrial sites. He set up a studio workshop, the Banner Arts Project in North London in 1976. The banners have been inspired both from his travels to Africa and Asia having been introduced to Chinese scroll paintings and murals as well as the British Trades Union banner tradition. Some were shown at his solo exhibition at the ICA, London in 1980 when the Contemporary Art Society commissioned an eight-strip sports banner which they donated to City University, London in 1982.
