Biography
Keith New (b. London 1926 - d. 2012) studied at Sutton and Cheam School of Art, 1942–5, then in the stained glass department of Royal College of Art, 1948–53. After working in New York for Steuben and Corning Glass, 1953–4, New taught in the stained glass department of Royal College of Art, 1955–68, then became principal lecturer in foundation studies at Kingston Polytechnic. As well as doing book-jacket design for the publisher Michael Joseph and designs for John Cranko’s ballet Reflection at Sadler’s Wells, New handled a number of stained glass commissions including three nave windows for Coventry Cathedral, a south choir window in Bristol Cathedral plus a rose window in Christ Church, Calgary, Canada.
He was a fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters. New’s paintings had a strong Neo-Romantic element mixed with a slight Surrealistic menace in his unpopulated landscapes. Mixed shows included RA Summer Exhibition, John Moores Exhibition in Liverpool and Austin/Desmond Fine Art, Sunninghill, where he had a solo show, 1991.
