Neil MacPherson RSA, RGI, RSW (1954)

Biography

Neil MacPherson (b. Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland, UK 1954) studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Jordanhill College of Education. He has won a number of awards, including the Shell Expo Award (1984) - when the Contemporary Art Society acquired his The Dance Master's Blue Coat and presented it to  Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow; Royal Over-Seas League Commonwealth Premier Award (1986); and Scotland on Sunday Mayfest Award (1989) as well as multiple awards from the Royal Scottish Academy from 1983 to 2017. His first solo show was at the Compass Gallery, Glasgow (1986) and continued with: Boundary Gallery, London (1988); Glasgow Print Studio (1989); Beaux Arts Gallery, Bath (1991); Boundary Gallery, London (1993); Electra Fine Art, Toronto, Canada (1994); Bohuslans Muse, Gottenburg, Sweden (1995); Beaux Arts Gallery, London (1996); Claude Andre Gallery, Brussels (1996); Glasgow Print Studio (1998); Boundary Gallery, London and Window of Dreams Retrospective, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (2000); Boundary Gallery, London (2004); Freshfields, Bruckhaus Deringer, London (2005); Compass Gallery, Glasgow (2007); Bohun Gallery, London (2010); and Browns Gallery, Tain, Scotland (2012). His artistic style, often inspired by myths, legends and Gaelic and Celtic folklore, has been described as “idealisations of people, of the land around him and their animals”, rich and animated surfaces using “varied textures of painted collage”.
