William Bower Dalton (1868 - 1965)

Biography

William Dalton (b. Wilmslow, Cheshire, UK 1868 - d. 1965) studied at Manchester School of Art. He became head of Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts from 1899 until 1920 and was simultaneously curator of the South London Art Gallery., succeeding Cecil Burns in 1899. His notable students were William Staite Murray (1881-1962), Charles Vyse (1882- 1971), Roger Fry (1866- 1934) and Reginald Wells (1877- 1951). Dalton exhibited with Bernard Leach (1877- 1979), Michael Cardew (1901-1983) and other leading figures in the studio pottery movement in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a Guildsman and master of the Artworkers' Guild.
