Co-creation at Gallions Primary School

As part of the delivery of Royal Docks’ public art strategy, CAS *Consultancy have been working with street art collective, Wood Street Walls on a large-scale mural commission in the heart of Royal Albert Wharf. The mural will be created in collaboration with the local community through a series of workshops, training days with students from the University of East London, and a drop in community painting day. 

Year 4 pupils from Gallions Primary School in Newham were invited to take part in the first workshop which commenced with a nature walk in nearby Beckton Park. Participants were asked to identify fauna and wildlife, and collect fallen leaves before returning to the classroom. 

In the second part of the session, pupils used leaves and flora found on their walk to create rubbings and cyanotype prints, the forms in which will feature in Wood Street Walls’ final mural composition.

"Connecting the students at Gallions Primary School as well as local residents to the strong biodiversity in and around the Royal Docks is one of the most important aspects of this public art commission. The participants of both workshops will be able to see their own artwork reflected in this 62 metre mural - it will become a really collaborative piece of work, and a strong visual legacy that the community will be proud of."
