The Artist's Wife and Baby represents Lilian Holt (1898-1983), a painter who had been the artist's companion since 1928 and who later became his second wife, holding their child, Diana. Diana was born in the in the Asturias region in Spain in May 1935; the family, including also Dinora Mendelson (1924-2009), Bomberg’s step-daughter, returned to England in October 1935 due to the impending Spanish Civil War. They rented a flat in Lymington Road in Hampstead, London where this picture was painted. It was gifted by Dinora, Mrs Davies-Rees (1924-2009) and her daughter, Mrs Juliet Lamont ti the Contemporary Art Society in 1987 and presented to the Tate Gallery in the same year.
