Camille Henrot (b. 1978, Paris) is a multi-disciplinary artist working with video, sculpture, drawing and installation. Her practice interrogates typologies of cultural production and visual information and questions mental resistances and the past’s resonance, whether it be drawn from myth or from reality. Working with different scales and histories, Henrot examines the different hierarchies and systems that govern the production and dissemination of culture, objects, knowledge and more within single works or installations.
Grosse Fatigue (2013), a video work shown at The Encyclopaedic Palace at the 55th Venice Biennale, (2013) was awarded the prestigious Silver Lion for most promising young artist. The work combines scientific history and the myths and stories relating to creation that have disseminated through religious and cultural traditions. Henrot incorporates a poem, a collaboration with Jacob Bromberg, delivered as a spoken word performance, and music with a diverse range of imagery that includes objects from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington and found footage from the web.
Camille Henrot lives and works in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include The Pale Fox, Chisenhale Gallery, London (2014); Snake Grass, Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2014); Cities of Ys, New Orleans Museum of Art (2013) and How to live together?, Slought Foundation, Philadelphia (2013). Group exhibitions include Club Trouw, Stedelijk Museum, Netherlands (2013); Companionable Silences, Nouvelle Vague, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013); A Disagreeable Object, SculptureCenter, New York (2012); Elles, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2010). Henrot is shortlisted for the Hugo Boss Prize 2014. She is represented by kamel mennour, Paris; Johann König, Berlin and Metro Pictures, New York.
Henrot’s solo show The Restless Earth, curated by Massimiliano Gioni and Gary Carrion-Murayari is on view at the New Museum, New York until 29 June. The Pale Fox travels to Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Bétonsalon – Centre for art and research, Paris and Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster throughout 2014-15.
