For the final part of our #CASatHome film series we are pleased to present Monolog (2009) by Laure Prouvost. Donated to the Whitworth Gallery, University of Manchester by the CAS in 2012, it has been made available here for 72 hours only through the generosity of the artist and Lisson Gallery.

Prouvost’s work moves between film, performance, sound and site-specific installation, it often plays with the relationship between director, performer, audience and the architecture of viewing. The provocative and eloquent film Monolog is a witty and direct challenge to the notion of the artist’s identity and institutional regulations imposed upon the viewing of art and the behaviour of a supposedly captive audience. Prouvost parodies her own role as a director and the role of the audience as she directs attention to the screening space itself. The film addresses the fallibility of language as a means of communication splicing together seemingly random snippets of footage, text and voiceover in a surreal stream of personal associations.

Laure Prouvost (b.1978, Lille) lives and works in Antwerp. Recent solo shows include Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon (2020); 58th International Venice Biennale (2019); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2018). Recent group exhibitions include Fundación CALOSA, Mexico (2020); Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (2019); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2018). Prouvost won the Turner Prize in 2013.
