Biography
Joanna Kirk (b. Cheshire, UK 1963) went to Goldsmiths' College, London in 1984 and in 1988, she won the Whitechapel Gallery Artists Award. Her work was exhibited in the 1990 touring exhibition, British Art Show. Kirk's pastel paintings are psychological landscapes in which the artist explores themes such as motherhood, isolation, humanity and intimacy. One of the few contemporary artists working in pastel, Kirk gradually builds up the surface of each piece, adding layer upon layer to produce compositionally rich and complex landscapes which become almost abstract in their surface detail.
