Biography
Lionel Maurice de Sausmarez (b. Sydney, Australia 1915 - d. London 1969) grew up in Grenada, West Indies and studied at Willesden School of Art and at the Royal College of Art in London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Leicester Galleries and with The London Group and the Artists' International Assoociation. He served as Chairman of the AIA from 1946-48. He was Head of Fine Art at Leeds Univeristy (1950-59). In 1962 he became Principal of the Byam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing; James Dyson was a one of his notable students. He wrote a number of books on art including The Dynamics of Visual Form (1964) and contributed articles on art and art education to several periodicals and journals. He was elected ARA in 1964.
