Ettore Cosomati (1873 - 1960)

Biography

Ettore Cosomati (b. Naples, Italy 24 December 1873 – d. Milan, Italy 14 February 1960) who was orphaned by the time he was 10 years old, spent his childhood in the Campania at San Marco dei Cavoti, Benvenuto and years later was inspired to paint the landscape from his memory. He had graduated in accounting in Naples and taught mathematics before pursuing a self-taught artistic career. He first exhibited in Paris (1896) and then in Munich where he lived until 1915 where he was taught etching by Bernhard Mannfeld (1848-1925) and was one of the artists of the Frankfurt Secession. He also lived in Switzerland, London and Milan. He was both a painter as well as a writer and illustrator. A monograph was written by the futurist painter Carlo Carrà in 1923 and a posthumous solo exhibition was held at the Palazzo Reale, Milan in 1960.
