André Fraye (1888 - 1963)

Biography

André Fraye (b. Nantes, France 1889 - d. Paris, France 1963) was a French painter, illustrator and engraver. He studied with Maxime Maufra (1861-1918) and the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1912, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and exhited his portrait of Maufra.  In 1922 he received the Blumenthal Prize and was given the National Order of the Legion of Honor in 1955. His Old Harbour and Cathedral, Marseilles (1920) was gifted by the dealer Joseph Duveen (1869-1939) to the Contemporary Art Society in 1928 and was presented to Manchester Art Gallery in 1935.
