Biography
Zubel Kachadoorian (b. Detroit, Michigan, USA 1924 - d. 2002) is a Detroit native and educator and a pillar of the art community, began his artistic education at Meinzinger Art School in Detroit, and soon after would propel his career by working with Francis de Erdely at the Scarab Club. He became active in what he called “working scholarships” in order to pursue his career as an artist. He traveled to Oxbow Summer School in Saugatuck, Michigan, and even on to the Skowhegan School of Painting and sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine. He continued to educate himself through travel, from Chicago, New York, and Colorado to France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and North Africa.
In no time, Kachadoorian gained international respect and acclaim. Perhaps part of what makes his work so striking, is his distinct evolution as an artist. His pieces from the 1940s portray the grittiness of his childhood neighborhood. When one looks at his later works, from the 1980s until his death in 2002, his technique dramatically shifts to ethereal images that undeniably resonate with the viewer; light, colour, and dream-like figures flood his pieces. Regardless of era, Kachadoorian’s artwork has long been, and continues to be, highly favoured by collectors not only in Michigan, but throughout the world.
