Biography
Robert Mason (b. Leeds, Yorkshire, UK 1946) studied at Harrogate School of Art (1963-65); Hornsey School of Art (1965 -68); and the British School at Rome (1968-70) - with an Italian Government Scholarship. He gained First Prize in the Bayer Herzlandschaften (UK) International, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and tour (1974); Arts Council Awards (1976–79) and Second Prize International Drawing Biennale, Middlesbrough (1977). Mason was artist-in-residence at Ashby de la Zouch Upper School (1983); gained a Linbury Fellowship in Figurative Drawing (1993) and taught the drawing master’s course at Wimbledon School of Art.
He has participated in many group shows including: Serpentine Graphics, Serpentine Gallery (1973); The British Art Show, tour (1979); British Drawing, Hayward Gallery (1982); John Moores Liverpool Exhibition (1987); School of London, Odette Gilbert Gallery (1989) and Recent Acquisitions, British Museum (1996). His work has often been affected by memories of his past before his sister, brother, mother and father died from incurable diseases wthin three years of each other. He has had many solo shows in Britain and abroad, including A Line from East to West, Centro Cultural Borges, Buenos Aires, Argentina and British Council, Hong Kong (1998 & 2000); Substance and Shadow, Centro De Arte De Sao Joao de Madeira, Portugal (2004); Monument and Myth, Edwin’s Gallery, Jarkarta, Indonesia (2007) and The Moment Of Privacy Has Passed, Usher Gallery, Lincoln, UK (2010) where he showed fiery, gestural canvases. His work is in both public and corporate collections, including Arts Council, Bank of England Museum, British Council un UK and Arbetets Museum, Sweden and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, USA.
