Biography
John Harper (b. 1946) studied at Manchester College of Art and University (1971). He had his first solo show at The Serpenetine Gallery, London in 1973, followed by The Barbican Gallery, London; The Photographers Gallery, London; the AIR Gallery London - from which the Contempopary Art Society acquied 7 gelatin silver photographs: Vertical Catchment A (1977), and two drawings: Physical Drawing No. 12 (1977) and Catchment No. 13 (1977) and presented them to the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia; Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh; Mappin Gallery, Sheffield; Chapter Arts, Cardiff; Ferens Art Gallery, Hull; Herbert Gallery, Coventry; Spacex, Exeter and Spike Island, Bristol. He has received support from the Arts Council through grant aid and various projects, residencies, and commissions and his corporate sponsors have included Agfa UK, Kodak UK and English Nature. Harper's artistsic practice comprises the production of large-scale constructed photo works and digital imaging, predominatly concentrating on the land and and aspects of our perception of landscape. He was an honoary member of LAND2 and held a residency at the Fermynwoods gallery and forestry site in Northamptonshire - a bookwork, Broken and Breaking Ground, was published through RGAP, and distributed by Cornerhouse. He has also taught fine art at the University of Northampton since 1971.
