*Consultancy was appointed in 2022 to develop the Oxford North Cultural Scheme for Oxford North, a gateway development to the city. A new innovation district comprising laboratories, amenities and housing, Oxford North focusses on the future, with sustainable and inclusive public realm at its centre.
The Scheme centres on the core characteristics of the development, establishing a world-class life sciences research and innovation centre for the UK and Europe. It provides a framework for reaching out to stakeholder communities as they come online, forming a roadmap to develop and deliver public art that is woven into the fabric of the landscape and architecture across Oxford North.
The Cultural Scheme proposes a model for a high-profile public art programme that builds upon Oxford City Council’s Thriving Communities Strategy. It outlines ways in which a governance mechanism can be established to advise and guide decision making for consortium partners Thomas White Oxford, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Stanhope, The Hill Group, Oxford City Council and leading cultural organisations within Oxford.
*Consultancy has worked with these partners to canvas local stakeholders, community collaborators and life science professionals in the construction of new opportunities for an outstanding public art offer, crafting carefully considered artist briefs for realisation as well as a stand-alone Engagement and Legacy Programme. To ensure robust and transparent governance, we have established a Public Art Steering Group that acts as an advisory body of stakeholders that makes recommendations to Oxford North’s senior team on artist selection, proposal selection and elements of the Engagement and Legacy Programme.
