

Erik Jerk Werkmäster (b.1896 Utanåker, Rättvik, Sweden - d. Rättvik, Sweden 1978) studied at Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm (1916-19), and at the Academy of Arts, Stockholm (1919-22) from whom he received a travel scholarship and went to Berlin and Munich. While he was staying in Germany, he received a request if he was willing to assist Oscar Brandtberg (1886-1957) in his work on the decoration of the first Gothenburg Exhibition in 1923. After Brandtberg resigned over a disagreement Werkmäster took over its management and thereafter organised, as artistic director around seventy national and international exhibitions and fairs. As an artist, he produced altarpieces for churches in Sweden and decorative wall schemes for buildings including at Eltham Place, London in 1936. He had a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Dalarna Museum, Falun in 1977.
