

Johannes Joseph Vincenz Cissarz (b.Gdańsk (Danzig), Poland – d. Frankfurt am Main, Germany 1942) studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Leon Pohle (1841-1908) and Hermann Freye (1844-1921) between 1891-4 and, in 1895, was a student of the Belgian history painter Ferdinand Pauwels (1830-1904) there. His first work was an altarpiece but he also worked as a commercial graphic artist from 1897. He also collaborated with interior design groups like Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau GmbH, Altdeutsche Weberei Stein und Mull designing wallpapers and furnishings. Between 1903-06 he was member of the Darmstadt artists’ colony and participated in the 1904 St Louis World Fair. He also taught at the Württemberg Art Friends Association in Stuttgart and in 1909 became professor at the Stuttgart Art Academy and from 1916-39 w as head of painting at the Städelschule in Frankfurt.
