Biography

Maurice Brocas (b. Brussels, Belgium  June 24 1892 - d. Uccle, Belgium February 20 1948) was a painter and wood engraver. He took take evening classes at the Academy of Saint- Josse-ten-Noode and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Brussels, in the class of Constant Montald (1862-1944) and where he met his future wife the artist Suzanne Cocq (1894-1979). He won the Picard Prize in 1927. He also taught at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts, Antwerp. In 1939, he was won the International Prize for Engraving at the Venice Biennale and was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium in 1946.
