Biography
Vera Waddington (b. Wiltshire, UK 1876 - d. 1954) trained at the Slade School of Fine Art under Philip Wilson Steer and the formidable Henry Tonks. Her first solo show, held at the Carfax Gallery, London, in December 1910 featured drawings and watercolours made during a remarkable journey to China on the Trans Siberian Railway in 1909-10. Waddington was already well established as a professional artist by the time she learnt the art of wood engraving from the renowned Eric Fitch Daglish (1892-1966) in the late 1920’s. Her first exhibited works in this medium were shown in 1929 at the Claridge Galllery and at the Art Institute of Chicago. She held a further solo show at the Goupil Gallery, London in 1939 and continued to make wood engravings and linocuts, as well as painting in oils, until her death following a road accident in 1954.
