Luigi Servolini (1906 - 1981)

Biography

Luigi Servolini (b. Livorno, Italy 1906 - d. Livorno, Italy 1981) was a printmaker who graduated in literature from the University of Pisa, from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, and then studied the history of mediaeval and modern art at the University of Florence. He also taught, was director of the Federiciana Library in Fano, and wrote as an art critic., as well as participating in six biennales of Venice. In 1935, he promoted the creation of a xylograph (woodcut and wood-engaraving) museum in Carpi, the birthplace of the Renaissance master Ugo da Carpi (c. 1480-1532), asking Italian printmakers to send their artworks, which opened in 1937. Together with the Futurist artist Carlo Carrà (1881-1966), Servolini founded the association of the Italian engravers.
