Justin Denys Ingram Knowles (1935 - 2004)

Biography

Justin Knowles (b. Exeter, Devon, UK 1935 - d. Bovey Tracey, Devon, UK 2004) was a self taught as a geometric abstract artist, creating large sculptures and working drawings. After National Service 1955-7, he worked in industry and advertising; travelled extensively on the continent and in Africa, where he was inspired him to collect its art, guided by the dealer Herbert Reiser. He taught at Bath Academy of Art (1965) at Corsham and Exeter College of Art and Design (1974). Knowles was included in the English Eye exhibition at Marlborough-Gerson Gallery, New York in 1965,  The New Generation at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1966 and Survey '67 Abstract Painters, Camden Arts Centre in 1967. He had several solo exhibitions including at Plymouth City Art Gallery (1967), Waddington Galleries(1973) and he had a retrospective at The National Technical Museum, Prague (2002). Knowles was a Contemporary Art Society Committee Member (1965-6).
