Dr Harold Paine Widdup VRD, MB, ChB, Surgeon Commander, RNVR (1899 - 1962)

Biography

Dr Harold Percival Paine Widdup VRD, MB, ChB, Surgeon Commander, RNVR (b. Sherbrooke, near Montreal, Quebec, Canada 15 March 1899  - d. Kensington, London, UK, 1 November 1962) was the son of John Roberts Widdup (1870-1946) and Emily France (born 1865). He married Kathleen Mary Gilligan in 1921 in Liverpool; they had one son; his address was 297 Liverpool Rd, Birkdale, around 1934-1960. Widdup left some 366 works of art to the Contemporary Art Society and a revisionary of his house in Kensington, London - 76 Cambridge Gardens, W10. Some of the artworks were exhibited at the Recent Acquisitions of the CAS, 18 July to 8 August 1964 at the Arts Council Gallery in St James's Square and 150 were presented to museums throughout the UK, notably The Wilson in Cheltenham and abroad over the ensuing years. Others from the bequest, mainly by French and British artists were exhibited at The Redfern Gallery's 44th Summer Exhibition, 17 June - 25 September 1964.
