The two old pottery ovens at East Vale, Longton, Staffordshire are depicted. It is a working drawing made in 1931 for an etching which was exhibited at the Society of Staffordshire Artists, Stoke-on-Trent, March 1943. It was purchased from the artist by Sir Edward Marsh (1872-1953) for the Contemporary Art Society (along with the 1929 View of Burslem, now in The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent) in 1944 and presented to the Tate Gallery in the same year.
