Anthony Caro’s steel and aluminium Early One Morning (1962) was purchased through Kasmin Ltd by the Contemporary Art Society at its British Sculpture in the Sixties exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1965 - having already been shown at his solo show at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in the autumn of 1963.

According to the artist this abstract painted metal piece relates to Matisse's painting The Window (1916) in the Detroit Institute of Arts, USA which Caro probably saw an image of in Alfred's Barr seminal 1951 monograph. The rhythmic sculpture with its various planes and lines can be experienced from all viewpoints. It was originally painted green but it was the artist’s wife who suggested Caro paint it red after it had been assembled in the garage and taken out into their garden.
