Wadsworth's drawing shows a gas works in the Midlands - the logo on the trucks is that of the Midlands Railway. The main building is a retort house, where gas was extracted from coal, and the barrels being loaded onto the trucks would have contained tar - a by-product of gas production.- from the Whitworth collection website
