Marlpits, Luppitt (1923)

Towards the end of his life, the painter Robert Pohill Bevan (1865-1925) and his wife, the Polish artist Stanislawa de Karlowska (1876-1952) bought a cottage called Marlpits on Luppitt Common, Devon in 1923, in which he painted a number of views of the neighbourhood. Bevan had visited the area with fellow Camden Town Group and Cumberland Market Group artists Spencer Gore and Charles Ginner and stayed with their friend Harold Bertam Harrison at Applehayes, near Clayhidon in the Blackdown Hills between 1912-15. During WW1 and afterwards he rented the cottages Lytchetts on Hart's Farm in Bolham Water and at Gould's Farm, Luppitt and others nearby each summer until his purchase of Marlpits where Ethelbert White and probably his wife Elizabeth 'Betty' Crofton Dodwell, must have visited in 1923.
