This chalk and watercolour picture relates to but is not a study for the painting The Ear-ring (Tate N03176). Both show a contemplative figure before a mirror and were exhibited at the New English Art Club winter exhibition in 1911 where the new Contemporary Art Society would have acquired it and showed it at its First Public Exhibition in London, Goupil Gallery, in April 1913 . Both were also presented to the Tate Gallery in 1917 but the oil was gifted from Charles Lambert Rutherston (1866-1927).
