The frivolous romantic style of this composition is characteristic of Charles Conder (1868-1909) and was only a passing phase in the work of William Rothenstein. The picture was severely criticised when it was exhibited at the NEAC in April 1895 when it had the title: ‘A Panel, being part of a scheme for the decoration of a room’.
