Birds

One of two watercolours by Graham Sutherland as illustrations for the cover design for the May 1943 edition of the literary magazine Poetry London (1939-51) edited by the Tamil poet Meary James Thurairajah Tambimuttu (1915 –1983). Lyrebird- Day and Lyrebird - Night (1943) were originally purchased by Sir Colin Anderson (1904-1980) from the artist during WW2 whilst he and his Australian-born wife were having dinner with the artist at the Cafe Royal. Anderson, soon to become the CAS Chairman, gifted them to the Contemporary Art Society and they were presented to the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Australia in 1959, perhaps also because of the suitability of the subject matter.
